Faces Panorama
To put himself in the position as a Life Observer, in Ge Hui’s recent paintings we could see from his distinctive angle, the figurative paintings solidly record his observation and are thought provoking. Ge Hui explores this theme in his current solo exhibition in Hong Kong by regarding and listening to the vast land and all living beings with a peaceful mind.
Observing the sequel in his paintings, it can be said that Ge Hui is an artist endowed with extraordinary capacity in recording visual imageries in his mind. His quiet and tranquil personality allows him to isolate himself from the disturbing world, and opened his senses for a detailed observation and documentary of human beings. At the same time, what he saw from these faces was also a certain degree of reflection of himself.
Visually, his interpretation of many faces may not be pleasant to most audience, we saw in his portraits always present the fragile and damaged qualities of a person, yet they are all so honest and real. Ge Hui experiences the circulation of injury and restoration in everyday life same as every character he witnesses; yet in the end they never forgot to drive away the hardness in life by smiling. Injury in his perception is not entirely a negative conclusion but rather a self-healing process of a human being, which has made him a better person.
Ge Hui brings his audience to his tranquility space, and let them observe as an outsider. He keeps on exploring the world with his genuine mind, as he believes it is the only way out. Only if we choose to face the real self and to let go, we may well make peace with ourselves, and no longer suffer in the illusionary world.
As Ge Hui said, “Without doubt, life is a pleasant journey.”
